Get Moving With Math Songs!

Are you looking for a great way to make math come to life? I bet you know what I’m about to say next…Just press “PLAY!”

Songs are a great way to introduce concepts, to review concepts, and to pave the way for any lesson. I always have songs ready in my classroom. I create lyric packets so that each child has a set. I also write the words down on large chart paper, and I place the posters onto a flip chart in the order of my CD or playlist. (Okay, I still use CD’s, but I know some of you are a little more high-tech than me!) Children are motivated to sit together, focus, and try their hardest–all in hopes that they will have the chance to point to the words in the next song.

When children point to words as they sing, any song doubles as a reading activity. Children learn to read from left to right, and from top to bottom, with 1:1 correspondence. Sometimes, we do specific motions to help children to comprehend song concepts. I’ve chosen to share ideas for a few math songs that I felt were important enough to include in at least 2 products:

1. “Circles Go ‘Round and ‘Round” (from Common Core KinderMath and We Love Math): Make shapes in the air with children as the song plays. My class also makes fun rolling motions during the “Aideay, aideo, Aideiddle-i-oodle-i-o” part. Discuss numbers of sides and corners after the song plays. Alternatively, you may want to draw shapes on the board as children draw them on whiteboards/in notebooks as the song plays.

Circles Go Round and Round Song Sample

2. “100 Days of School” (from Common Core KinderMath and We Love Math) or “Count to 120” (from Common Core 1st Grade Math): Hold up fingers in sets of 10. You can also have 10 children (or 12 for first grade) stand up in front of the class. They can take turns holding up 10 fingers each as the song plays. You can also play the YouTube videos–Free for a limited time! (I’d love to know which one you like best!)

3. “Telling Time” (from Common Core 1st Grade Math and We Love Math): Give children Judy clocks. Most classrooms have at least one large geared clock. Ask a lucky volunteer to move the clock as the song plays. Help the child to move the minute hand properly. Once the class has had enough practice, I recommend getting individual clocks with gears. I found 6 for $14.99 from Learning Resources on amazon.com … Kind of expensive, but I think they’re worth it:)

Telling Time Sample - Jennifer Fixman

4. “Alligator Greater Than/Less Than” (from Common Core KinderMath, Common Core 1st Grade Math, and We Love Math): In this song, children learn that the “greater than-less than” symbol is similar to an alligator’s mouth. The teacher or a student can write numbers from the song on the board. Children can make small alligator symbols with their hands. Their thumbs would be the mouths, and their other fingers would be the heads. Alternatively, they could make large symbols by opening and closing their arms. An alligator puppet’s always fun–And I happen to have one, available here!

Alligator Greater Than Less Than Song Sample

5. “Making 11-20” (from Common Core KinderMath and Common Core 1st Grade Math): You can do several things to make this song “come to life” in your classroom.
-Ask one child to hold up 10 fingers at the beginning of the song. Ask another child to hold up one more finger at a time as the class counts.
-Play the PowerPoint presentation as the song plays (available here).
-Ask children to show tens and ones blocks as the song plays. Discuss how concepts work after the song ends.
-Show with other objects, such as straws bundled in a group of 10.

Making 11 Through 20 Song Sample

Songs are a nonthreatening, research-based, developmentally appropriate way to introduce, comprehend, and review any topic! I hope these ideas make a difference in your classroom.

Please share–How do you use songs either at home, or in the classroom?

Thanks,

Jenny Fixman Kramer

Meet Teacher-Author Sarah Hankinson!

Welcome back for another Featured Teacher Tuesday! This week, meet Sarah Hankinson from Learning is for Superstars!

Screen Shot 2015-12-08 at 4.51.47 PM

Sarah and her husband, Josh, just had the adoption of their daughters finalized! Woohoo!!! They were foster parents for these girls for 414 days before they became a forever family..

Sarah is in her fifteenth year of  teaching in central Virginia and is a Liberty University graduate. She taught 8 years in fourth grade before moving six years ago to first grade. She has an interesting group this year – a combination of first and second graders! All of these years have been at the same school.

Even with Sarah’s busy of life and teaching a combo class, she loves to create whenever possible!  The most popular item in her Teachers Pay Teachers store is her money pack for first graders. It is full of counting pennies, nickels, and dimes individually and in mixed groups. There are picture cards with money amounts to sort and match, along with printables for each coin. Since Sarah teaches in VA, which doesn’t have Common Core standards, this is designed to meet Standards of Learning for Virginia.

money activities image

Another popular unit is her Benjamin Franklin pack, one of the famous Americans taught to first graders in Virginia, although the social studies standards change for next year! Included is an informational booklet, along with word/picture matching cards, word search, and comprehension questions.

Screen Shot 2015-12-08 at 4.55.14 PM

Who doesn’t need a quick print and go, especially at this time of the year?! Look no further! Sarah’s Christmas print and go is perfect for your first graders! Full of 20 black and white printables, including labeling, beginning sounds, syllables, CVC words, writing prompts, alphabetical order, addition fact fluency, and word problems!

And for a winter freebie, which will last you past Christmas and into January! My children LOVE I Spy activities and this reviews distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds.

Holiday Math Fun!

As a teacher, I’m always thinking about…

  1. Ways to teach effectively
  2. Ways to make teaching and learning fun.
  3. Ways to make independent/center time EFFECTIVE!

One issue we all have with independent work time is that children may get all the answers wrong–and no one is there to correct them. Studies show that we imprint information in our brains if we repeat it over and over. “4, 8, 12, 15” … Not okay!

This is how I’ve tried to solve the problem this holiday season. I’ve created self-checking math centers. Children can cut out the centers, glue them into Interactive notebooks, and quiz themselves or others by lifting flaps. They can practice writing answers on whiteboards, and/or use manipulatives provided in the packet to prove that their answers are correct.

I’ve created several versions of the centers so far. This video was designed to show the interactive sections of my 3rd grade centers, but the ideas are similar in the Kindergarten centers as well. First and second grade teachers…I should have some ready for next year:)

Please stop by my Teachers Pay Teachers store to try these out!

Introducing Carol Polston, “The Chocolate Teacher”

Our next Featured Teacher is Carol Polston over at The Chocolate Teacher.button white backgroundCarol is in her 23rd year of teaching. She has taught mostly first grade with a few years of second and kindergarten sprinkled in here and there. Her love is definitely first grade. Her favorite part of teaching first is seeing the growth in her students from the beginning to the end of the year. This growth never ceases to amaze her. She feels blessed to be able to be a part of her students’ growth!
Carol has been married for 38 years. She and her husband have three grown children and two adorable grandchildren. An unusual fact about Carol is that she had the privilege to teach all three of children in first grade. She taught her older two children as a home-school teacher, and her youngest child was in her 1st grade classroom in public school. She feels happy that she got to teach all three of them how to read! Her youngest daughter is now also a teacher (teaching P.E.- A love she did not get from her mom).

2015-10-06_0003

Carol loves teaching just about every subject (okay, maybe not P.E.). She especially loves to teach phonics and reading! Grammar is also a subject she enjoys teaching. Carol started creating phonics and language units to sell on TpT a little over a year ago. She enjoys creating units to use in her own classroom and to share with others. The first grade classrooms in her district use her phonics and language units. You can click the links below to see a few of these.

Slide1 Slide1-1

Slide1-1

She also enjoys providing activities to get her students up and moving as they learn. To encourage this, she has created Write the Room activities. These activities are so much fun. Students move around the room looking at cards that are pinned to the wall and they record their answers on an answer sheet. She has created quite a few to go along with her weekly phonics skills. You can check out her short vowel word family bundle here:

Slide1-2

Carol also just completed a beginning mapping unit. She used it in her classroom, and the kids loved it. The culminating activity in this unit is a map skill lap book. You can see it here:

Slide1-2

Carol has quite a few free products in her store. Here are two that you can try that will introduce you to her phonics units and Write the Rooms:
